MultiplexAI: AI for everything visible on a microscopy slide

20/08/2025

On July 3rd, the consortium behind MultiplexAI held its first meeting to prepare the launch of a new initiative to validate a multi-disease diagnostic algorithm developed in collaboration with leading institutions across Africa and Europe.

Funded by Global Health EDCTP3, the project supports innovative digital health solutions for sub-Saharan Africa. Its primary objective is to advance the use of artificial intelligence in microscopy-based diagnostics, with an initial focus on parasitic diseases, which continue to affect more than one billion people worldwide.

Designed as a scalable platform, MultiplexAI can be applied to multiple diseases and sample types, aiming to establish a new benchmark in point-of-care (POC) diagnostics. The project seeks to expand access to accurate testing, reduce misdiagnoses in vulnerable populations, and contribute to universal health coverage through expert-level analysis.

The consortium brings together nine institutions: the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (Spain), Ahmadu Bello University Zaria (Nigeria), Instituto de Salud Carlos III (Spain), Jimma University (Ethiopia), Centro de Investigação em Saúde de Manhiça (Mozambique), IRCCS Ospedale Sacro Cuore Don Calabria (Italy), Réseau inter-promotion de la licence de Biochimie-Génétique at UFHB (Ivory Coast), Hutzpa Innovations (Nigeria), and SpotLab (Spain).

The official launch of MultiplexAI is scheduled for the week of September 15th, 2025.
