The technology powering MultiplexAI wins Nature Best Abstract Award

Paris, September 17, 2026

We’re proud to share that “Mobile AI Microscopy for Universal Diagnosis: From Blood Cancers to Neglected Tropical Diseases” won the Best Abstract Award at the Nature Redefining Healthcare in the Age of AI conference in Paris in September 2026.

The competition was tough: 450 abstracts were submitted and only seven were selected.

Miguel Luengo-Oroz, CEO and co-founder of Spotlab, the company developing the technology behind MultiplexAI, presented it in Paris. He explained how mobile AI microscopy is helping bring high-quality diagnosis to patients wherever they live.

Different diseases. Different settings. The same diagnostic gap.

The diseases differ from place to place, and so do the settings, but the problem is the same: many patients still can’t get accurate diagnosis. The award shows that AI mobile microscopy can help very different health professionals, from a haematologist in Spain reviewing bone marrow samples to a health worker in Mozambique analysing blood smears to diagnosing malaria.

For MultiplexAI, this recognition supports our core idea: diagnostic tools built to work in many places can bring high-quality diagnosis to far more people.

About MultiplexAI

MultiplexAI turns any standard optical microscope into an autonomous AI copilot. It detects and tells apart multiple parasites and blood cell types in real time, so that fast, accurate and affordable diagnosis can reach the point of care. The project is coordinated by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), and Spotlab develops the technology. Nine partners from Africa and Europe are clinically validating it:

Bringing Mobile AI Microscopy Across Africa and Europe

Nine institutions across five countries in Africa and Europe form this consortium to validate this technology, supported by the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP3).
